A handsome man!
Perfect Ridge for the breed!
I've been pretty quiet the last few weeks, and there's a reason. As many of you know, I have a big lump of love I call Luda. We have had our Rhodesian Ridgeback since birth, and he's been in our family for almost 7 years. I love dogs, and especially love our "first born", if you will. Sure, he's in the prime of life, and has become quite the old grump at times, especially since acquiring a mess of skin allergies that will be life-long for him. Still, I love him.
With that in mind, I am sad to post that we no longer have our little puppy (ha-little...)
A few weeks ago, after weeks of unwelcomed warning growls, Luda snapped at Chase and scratched his face with his teeth. He came very close to hitting Chase's eye, and ripped his shirt too. I was absolutely horrified in that moment, for many reasons. I checked over Chase's body, and that seemed to be the only damage to him, other than the confused fear in his eyes. As the tears started flowing, I realized that I could no longer keep my firstborn puppy (I know, isn't it silly to say that?). I called my mom and asked her to take Luda to her house while I tried to think of a place for my 130 pound dog to go. I didn't want him to die for his indiscretion, and I am partly to blame for his actions too. Just FYI, don't ever feed your puppy 'people snacks' in the kitchen, EVER, as I have realized that the proximity to food is what caused this sad interaction.
To stop babbling, I have found Luda a home at a Ridgeback Rescue facility north of my home town. The best part of it all, if there is a good part, is that the rescue is "no kill" and they have several other friends for him. Another good thing I found is that they have an EDUCATED vet that will accurately diagnose Luda's allergy problems, and hopefully help him to live a happier life. Lastly, even if Luda isn't adopted out (which is the main goal of the rescue), they will let him live there...and we can even come visit if we want. The owners really liked him, so I'm grateful and hopeful that he will be happier there...away from a touchy toddler, and a small house, and a mommy that would not be able to fully trust him again.
I am ok...and I am sad...but I know and understand that my role in this life is to provide Chase with a safe environment to grow in, that is God's plan-completely. I struggle to think that I've given up on him, and that is my request..pray for me, that I have done the right thing for Chase, Luda, and myself.
The first meeting..................it really was a brotherly love.

Love you! You are a good mommy to Chase AND Luda. You did the best thing for both of them. Hang in there!
